The Craftsman style is one of today’s most recognizable house styles, and one of its distinctive elements is its use of horizontal lap siding. Twin Cities Siding and Roofing shares an overview of the elements that contribute to this truly American house style.
What Is the Craftsman Style?
Craftsman homes are a product of the American Arts and Crafts Movement and became prevalent between 1910 to 1925. This style emphasizes handcrafted elements as opposed to the manufactured look of industrial buildings. While individuality is an important element, there are certain aspects that make Craftsman homes an easily recognizable style, such as a low-pitched hip or gable roof, a covered front porch and large single dormer facing the curb. Wood shakes, along with asphalt shingles of similar style, are used as roofing.
Siding for Craftsman Homes
Craftsman homes are associated with horizontal lap siding. Before the prevalence of manufactured siding, horizontal lap siding was made by hand and painted after installation. Products that feature authentic-looking wood grain like James Hardie® siding are favored over the smooth surfaces of vinyl siding. Wood shakes can also be added as accents, but are rarely used as the main siding material. This is because the amount of detail would clash with a visually busy wood shake roof or similarly styled asphalt shingles. On the other hand, lap siding has clean, horizontal lines that offset the busyness of the roof.
